It time to know
Research on reclamation of soil has helped
India to reclaim its 1.3 million hectares of alkaline/sodic soils,
thereby making it fit for crop cultivation. The north-western state
of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have undergone a major
reclamation of alkaline/sodic soils that has contributed significantly
to the green revolution. This was stated by Dr. P.S. Minhas, a renowned soil scientist and Director of Punjab agriculture university Ludhiana. Its a university who played Important role in green revolution in India. Dr. Minhas gave a detailed account of the nomenclature,
classification and diagnostic measures for the management of
salt-affected soils.
He said nomenclature of saline sodic, saline alkaline, black alkaline,
alkaline vertisols, sodic versitols, etc. have been assigned to
different categories of salt affected soils. The standard
nomenclature has greatly helped to evolve a proper and uniform
diagnostic measures which have greatly help in the management of the
soils. He further said that in view of the increased pressure to
produce more, efficient management of these saline soils has become
necessary. He presented a memento to Dr. Minhas. PAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Manjit Singh
Kang congratulated the Indian Society of Soil Sciences (Ludhiana
Chapter) to aware people. He added that the
effective management of the saline soils has become necessary in order
to achieve higher food production level. The solution to the future
challenges put forth by Dr. Minhas in his lecture will greatly help in
the restoration of salt affected soils, added Dr. Kang. He urged the
students to join professional societies that provide them interaction
opportunities with eminent scientists.
